Last night, I met up with an old friend, who was in town for a meeting of sorts. In Dallas.
Hadn't seen Monica in, oh, fourteen years... but it was as though time had stood still. We picked right up where we left off. And it was good.
However, there was an interesting twist to our visit...
We met her, at her friend's house, who just happened to be the son of a pastor in our town of Frisco. The pastor is Chuck Swindoll. We do not attend Mr. Swindoll's church but we know of him, love him and revere him. He is, after all, an AWESOME pastor and we attend his church every once in awhile when we need a dose of funny and inspiring.
Again, we do not attend Mr. Swindoll's church because it is too big. And that would be 'big' with FOUR CAPITAL B's!!!!
So anyway, we meet up with Monica at her friend's house... unknowing that we were at the home of the son of Swindoll. Son of VERY FAMOUS PASTOR. Nope, we didn't have a clue. Or an idea. We just plain didn't know.
And as the evening progressed and we were past all of the reminiscing, we got around to figuring out why Monica was actually in town. It was a meeting. With a group of folks, all putting together some sort of religious program. One of the meeters was Mr. Swindoll's son and wife. In fact, it was their home they all were meeting at.
And again, as the evening progressed, the topic came up... and Monica whispered to me about whose home we were actually in.
After I got over my initial shock, I came to my senses and decided not to tell Rick where he was. More because he would have a million questions and would inevitably embarrass himself. And me. But also because I didn't want the people we were chatting with to think that we were in awe of where we were suddenly.
But suffice it to say, that if you don't tell your husband where he is, he can still embarrass himself, and you, by ignorance. Yeah, that can happen.
Nothing too embarrassing happened... but it was still awkward.
When asked where we went to church... Rick felt the need to share with everyone WHY we didn't go to Rev. Swindoll's church. And remember, he doesn't know whose house he's in...
He also felt the need to tell everyone ALL ABOUT Chuck Swindoll... because he had no clue that these folks knew him, too.
And as we were leaving, Rick spied a book on their bookshelf... that, yes, was written by Chuck Swindoll. And he had to comment on it.
"Look, Kris... they like Chuck Swindoll, too!"
And yes, at that point, I had to apologize to the crowd. I looked at Mr. Swindoll's daughter in law and said, "He has no clue where he is... I hope he finds this all funny in the car on the way home..."
He didn't.
He wanted to go back. And ask more questions. We drove home FAST.
Yeah. Rick suddenly wanted to come out of the dark that I had kept him in...
But Rick wasn't the only one with his foot in his mouth... I woke up on this fine Sunday morning and realized that I looked a little foolish as well. Because before I knew where I was and who I was speaking to, I had just advised everyone in the room where I lived... in Frisco... just three blocks from the Swindoll church. And I had felt the need to tell them all about Frisco... because I just knew that they had no clue where it was... never mind that the Swindoll church is IN Frisco.
Those Kahles? They sure are a bright group, they are.

Dearest Kris! I think I can speak for everyone there at the Swindoll's house that night that nothing you or Rick said about Chuck, his church or Frisco bothered anyone in the least. After all, when you're the son and daughter-in-law of such a famous pastor, I'm sure they've heard it all and more. And they both have wonderful senses of humor. I know that they were just pleased to host you in their home. Thanks for driving to come see me and meet Matthew. It was a gift!
Love,
Monica
